Toyota’s Gazoo Racing section in South Africa presented the racing car that will participate in the Dakar rally of 2017. The car is based on the Hilux, with its engine mounted in the center and the power transferred to the rear axle, which according to the team is faster and lighter than previous four-wheel-drive racing Hilux.

The weight of the car reaches 1,300 kilos, while the four-wheel drive car weighed 1,915 kilos. The new race car has larger wheels of 37 inches, suspensions with a significantly longer path and an tire inflation/deflation system.

Mechanically it is equipped with a naturally aspirated V8. The Japanese company will carry out intensive testing of the new Hilux Evo. The driver of the first car will be Nasser Al-Attiyah and the co-driver Matthieu Baumel. The other driver will be Giniel de Villiers and the co-driver will be Dirk von Zitzewitz, with the third car having as driver Leeroy Poulter and as co-driver Rob Howie.
