This is the brand new 2016 Mazda MX-5. The long-awaited fourth generation (ND) of the very popular roadster was presented today.
The first thing that someone notices one the new MX-5, is of course the design. Mazda has decided to adopt a much more aggressive design plan. Of course, the “Kodo” design language of the company is evident in the wide and low body of the car and the combination of clean lines and sharp edges.
The 2016 MX-5, is larger in width but shorter in length and height than the model that it replaces, the wheelbase is kept practically the same (2315 mm). The presentation confirmed that the weight of the ND, is 100 kg less than the NC.
Unfortunately, at this point we do not know the exact weight of the Japanese roadster (although it is said to weigh about 1,050 kilos), neither the capacity or power of the engine that it will have. The only thing announced by Mazda, is that the engine is the SKYACTIV-G, with the current range of this engine family, consisting of sets of 1.3, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 liter engines. Rumours say that the engines will be the 1,5 liter and the 2 liter, which will be upgraded to deliver 140 hp and 180 respectively, but the presentation did not mention this.
Whatever the engine, it will be combined with either a new six-speed manual gearbox or a new well, 6-speed manual. The power will of course be transferred to the rear wheels. The suspension will consist of double wishbone for the front axle and a multi-link arrangement at the rear while the wheels will have dimension 195/50/16 (205/40/17 optional).
Finally, the price of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 will be announced close to its date of sale, but Mazda often mentions the word “affordable”.
