Porsche has without doubt one of the richest histories in motorsports. Specifically, the 911 has participated and won literally thousands of races. A race that it lost through, was that of the East African Safari Rally in 1978.
After the engagement as a factory team from 1968 until 1970, Porsche returned with the 911 SC “Safari”, the first 911 converted into a rally car. The term “converted” by the way, is used in the broad sense since with the exception of the roll-cage, suspension, tires, some protective and extra light fixtures, the car is practically stock. The 911 SC “Safari” was located in the first position of East African Safari Rally 1978 for many hours but in the end, having hit a rock, it lost the victory to a Peugeot 504.
