The cars will use a “close-to-production” autonomous driving system, featuring a multi-beam laser scanner, four perimeter radars, Tri-focus camera, two long-range radars and twelve ultrasonic sensors. The system also uses a high-resolution 3D digital map, GPS data and a wave radar-camera mounted on the windshield, that can read traffic signs and the curvature of the road.

Volvo says that the autonomous system was designed to be reliable enough, so that the car can take over every aspect of driving in standalone mode. The autonomous driving system has backup systems that ensure the functioning of the autonomous driving, even if part of the system is turned off.
