Mercedes-Benz after the first announcement last July, presented today with all solemnity, the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, the concept brand new truck, which promises “the revolution on motorways” for 2025.
The concept truck has an aerodynamic design with many LED to illuminate the front grille. The LED’s are white when the driver is one who drives the truck and blue when the truck is driven autonomously by computers. Also they are orange when the driver wants to change lanes or turn.
The interior design is simple, but has a variety of technologies. Mercedes desire was to create a modern design with natural materials, that create a relaxing environment for the driver when the truck travels autonomously. The seat can turn the seat 45 degrees for the driver to sit more comfortably and rest.
The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 features autonomous driving system that operates with radar sensors and cameras, the system “Highway Pilot” is something similar to the autopilot of an aircraft, scanning the road ahead up to 250 meters. As the system is active, it runs at speeds of up to 85 km/h and it monitors the environment continuously and makes adjustments on the steering wheel, keeping a constant distance of 60 meters from the vehicle ahead. It should be noted that the system is unable to make overtaking maneuvers. To overtake another vehicle, the driver must take control of the truck.
A camera on the dashboard behind the windscreen scans the road 100 meters ahead to 45 degrees horizontally and 27 degrees vertically to recognize if the road has one or two lanes and if there are other vehicles, pedestrians or other objects on it.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the Future Truck 2025 is more than a prototype, since it was tested in real traffic conditions at speeds up to 80 km/h on the A14 motorway in Germany.
