These engines are part of an investment of €3 billion from Mercedes-Benz and according to the company they “set new standards in terms of power, refinement and efficiency” while opening new avenues with regard to modularity.

The first engine is a two-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine with codename M264, which is equipped among others with twin-scroll turbos, an improved intake manifold and a water pump powered by an electric system of 48 volts. The result of all this, is a performance of 268 hp.

Then we have the six-cylinder in-line, which is codenamed M256 in its petrol configuration and OM656 in its diesel configuration. Regarding the OM656, Mercedes says that it produces over 313 hp and more than 650 Nm of torque.

On the other hand, the M256 is an engine that is equipped with an electrical system of 48 volts used not only to power the water pump and for the air-condition, but also for the Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). Thus, the three-liter, six-cylinder in-line is able to deliver more than 408 hp and over 500 Nm torque, while emitting less CO2 by about 15%!

Finally, we have the M176 biturbo V8. The four-liter gasoline engine has been developed by AMG and according to the company it is able to produce more than 476 hp with the torque reaching about 700 Nm, available from 2,000 rpm. The new V8 is 10% more economical in terms of fuel consumption compared with its predecessor!

The M176 will also be offered with a cylinder deactivation function, that deactivates half the cylinders. The new S-Class will be the first model to be offered with these engines, but then other models of the company will be available with the same engines.
