In 1995 Mercedes-Benz presented the Vario Research Car, a prototype that had removable panels, which could change the type of bodywork. From a simple sedan, the car could be converted to a station wagon, or a convertible, or a pickup.

It was made of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic), which was then quite rare and expensive to manufacture at the time. Unfortunately the car never passed to production.
