DAPRA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), an agency of the US Department of Defense, responsible primarily for the development of new technologies for use by the military, gets about half billion dollars a year by the Ministry, employing researchers examining various projects to increase national security. One of the projects of these researchers includes the hacking of cars that have access to the internet.

The researchers managed to hack the OnStar security system of GM, through the remote control of the new Chevrolet Impala. The researchers managed to broadcast a data packet tricking the computers of the car and then placed in the car a malicious software that allowed them to reprogram the ECU of the control systems. Thus, the researchers gained access to all the functions of the car, the horn, the throttle and the brakes. DAPRA says all new cars can be hacked with only two of the 16 major car manufacturers being able to diagnose or respond to the attack in real time.
