At the Hawthorne Airport in California, next to SpaceX, Elon Musk revealed to the reporters the Model S P85D.
We achieved improved almost everything on the car, which is rare.
The Tesla Model S P85D, is the four-wheel drive version of the rear-wheel drive Model S P85. The new setup, adds a medium-sized electric motor (same for all versions, 60D, 85D and P85D, although in the last one it delivers 221 hp and on all the others 188 hp) just behind the front axle. The 60D and 85D, using the same engine at the rear axle as well, but the P85D, keeps the current motor of 470 hp, with the total horsepower reaching 691 hp and 931 Nm of torque!
Thanks to this setup, the 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) comes in just 3.2 seconds, which makes the Model S P85D faster than a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, or a Porsche Panamera Turbo S. The car does the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds. The top, P85D version has a reduced autonomy by 16 km, having a total autonomy of 442 km. Finally, the weight of the four-wheel drive Model S, has increased by 79 kilos in the 60D and 85D versions, while at the P85D, it has increased by 132 kilos.
Musk, also presented a fairly sophisticated system of semi-autonomous driving. The car “sees” the street with cameras and it sonar scans the area for other cars or obstacles of any kind. When the traffic stops, so does the car. If the driver wants to change lanes, all he needs to do is turn on the flash in the direction he wishes to move. Musk said in its present form, the system requires the driver’s attention, but we can expect a fully autonomous system in 5-6 years.
