The CEO of Yamaha India has confirmed that Yamaha is indeed preparing a 250 cc sports bike.
The new model will be manufactured in India at low cost, will likely be avilable in 2014. “In 2014 we will display a powerful sports bike with 250 cc in the Indian market,” said Hiroyuki Suzuki in the Indian financial website Financial Chronicle.
He confirmed that in the future will be too many motorcycles exported from India. For the moment, the company exports to Japan a limited number of Yamaha R15’s (with a 150 cc engine) manufactured in India, mainly in order to test the reactions and acceptance of buyers.
Specifications of the new 250 have not been disclosed. Competitors offer either twin, or single cylinder motorcycles, so Yamaha can come in any of these two options. The design will look like the YZF-R125.
The main competition comes from the single-cylinder Honda CBR250R, the two-cylinder Kawasaki Ninja 300, and some models of large Indian companies Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp – so the most critical asset is considered to be its low cost.
However, Mr. Suzuki has tried to dispel this impression. “Every motorcycle manufactured in India are produced at a considerably lower cost while meeting the high standards of developed markets. Their price in the Japanese market for example is doubled. We export R15 to Japan to test the acceptance of the market and will soon try other export products to Japan and other developed markets. ”
