According to Audi, the OLED lights have two electrodes, with at least one of them being transparent. These OLED lights have many thin layers of organic semiconducting materials that are activated by the low DC voltage of 4 Volts. The layers have a thickness of less than a millimeter, while the color generated can depend on the molecular composition of the light source.

The OLED, unlike the LED, produces a more homogeneous light, with the intensity of the light to be continuously variable. The OLED do not produce shadows, so they do not need reflectors, light guides and other similar optical components. Audi’s goal is to use the OLED technology in the turn signals of their future cars and the brake lights.
