At BMW’s booth at Detroit, there is a 3.0 CSL racing car, that is standing out, probably more than the renewed 6 series. The car is dressed in the colors of the M section, it weighs 1,102 kilos and according to the race it participated, it was equipped with either a 3.2 liter engine producing 344 hp or a 3.5 liter producing 430 hp.
The car has won the championship of the ETCC (European Touring Car Championship) in the years 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979 and it has taken victory in its class at the Le Mans Series in 1973. It was the car that took the first win on American soil for the BMW, the Sebring race of 1975.
The car, however, went down in history as the one that introduced BMW as the manufacturer of the “ultimate driving tool”, with the motto Ultimate Driving Machine used in the ads of the German company.
