It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche and it was influenced by the Volkswagen Kubelwagen, with Porsche having improved the performance and appearance.
The car was driven by an air-cooled four-cylinder engine of 1.5 liters and later by a 1.6-liter, derived from the Porsche 356, yielding 50 hp and having a top speed that reached 100 km/h. The four-wheel drive was one of the most important qualities of the car along with its short length and wheelbase of just 2.06 meters, that gave it the ability to climb steep slopes of up to 65%. As a military vehicle it was also amphibian, with its roof being made of an extremely sturdy vinyl and the interior being impermeable so that it can be used anywhere.
The 597 Jagdwagen went into production for three years from 1955 to 1958 and a total of about 71 units were build, with 49 of them being for “civil” use. This car was sold new in Germany, but the current owner acquired it in Japan in 2012 and it is one of the few that survived.
In September, Bonhams will be responsible for the auction of this car and its price is expected to reach between £170,000 and £200,000.
