The company decided that the new generation, will be developed by AMG, in order to make it more sporty.
The next SL will be based on the new MSA(Modular Sports Architecture) platform, which is the evolution of the current MRA platform that debuted in the latest generation of the C-Class (W205) and can support different lengths and wheelbases. In addition it will make extensive use of aluminum and CFRP that will help it to reduce its weight considerably.
The weight of the car will be reduced even further by replacing the hard folding roof with a soft roof like the one of the S-Class Cabriolet. Finally, it is expected to be available with a new 3-liter six-cylinder engine and a 4-liter V8 twin-turbo for the SL500, while the SL63 and SL65 will be equipped with a 6-liter V12 twin-turbo engine.
