A Volkswagen Golf TDI has set the Guinness record for lowest consumption in US. On the trip of 16 days the car managed to cross 48 US states and to travel 8,233 miles, having a consumption of just 81.17 miles per gallon.

Behind the wheel was the journalist Wayne Gerdes, who drove the car with the electronic engineer, Bob Winger. Fuel costs rose to $294.98, while the car was fitted with low-friction tires and devices that record the fuel consumption.
