Some say that the first car race, started the moment that the second car ever built, came out of the production line. The point is that if this race happened, then it was illegal and there is no way to substantiate it. The first organized race was in 1894 and the Mercedes-Benz was there, known as “Benz”, with two vehicles with Daimler engines. The first race was a test of strength, reliability, safety and comfort, because the vehicles had to travel 126 kilometers that separated Paris from Rouen.
First place, was shared by the cars with the Daimler engines (a Peugeot and a Panhard & Levassor) who shared the prize of 5,000 French francs. The 3.5 hp Benz was not so lucky but finished anyway in 5th place. The race was a huge success and attracted thousands of spectators.
