In the late 80s, the range of the M Power models was quite limited compared to the current range. The M5 E34 was initially equipped with a 6-cylinder in-line 3.6-liter engine and it was presented in 1988. BMW had also prepared the convertible version of the car that was supposed to be presented at the 1989 International Geneva Motor Show.

The convertible M5 featured a soft top roof, a reinforced chassis and two doors, instead of four. The engine remained the same and it produced 315 hp with 360 Nm of torque at 4,750 rpm.
One week before the car’s presentation, BMW finally canceled the project, believing that the M5 Convertible would produce a great demand in the respective, convertible version of the simple 5-Series and that perhaps could hurt the sales of the already existing 3-Series Convertible.
Finally, only one model was built which is located in the basement of M GmbH, but many people around the world have created replicas of the M5 E34 convertible.
