Because of the recent history of the brand and a majority of the models of the past, the Bugatti name has become synonymous with extravagance, luxury and speed.

After the Second World War, however, Ettore Bugatti had in mind something very different for the company: the Bugatti Type 68. After the war there was no need for luxury but affordable transportation. Money, metal and fuel were not in abundance, so a small car with a supercharged four-cylinder, 16-valve 318 cc engine producing 48 hp was a good choice for those years.

Unfortunately, only one Type 68 Bugatti was ever built even though a coupe version of the model was also planned.
