This is the Volvo XC90, which will be presented at the Paris auto show in early October with sales to begin in mid-autumn.
The XC90 will be the first Volvo model that will be based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), thanks to it, the weight has not increased while its distribution (of the weight) will be even better.
Approximately 90% of the components of the new model are completely new, including the “Hammer of Thor”, as the company calls its LED daytime running lights with the characteristic shape. Volvo, also states that the extensive use of boron steel in both the 2015 XC90 and the other models that will use the SPA, will allow the reduction of the dimensions of the cars and will simultaneous improve the offered security.
Inside the cabin, which can carry up to seven people, the sliding second row of seats, creates more space for those who sit in the third row, while the company emphasizes that all occupants will sit “in one of the safest cars in the world” thanks to a multitude of protection systems (deflection collision avoidance system, up to 50 km / h, automatic braking system) and of course, thanks to the design of the chassis and the materials used.
The design of the interior is simple and the large screen located on the center console stands out. The interior also features wooden ornaments and leather trim, with the shift lever being made of crystals of the Swedish company Orrefors.
At the interior we can also find a digital instrument panel, decorative aluminum, leather upholstery, a third row seat, which can carry people with height up to 1.7 meters with the audio system being of Bowers & Wilkins, yielding 1.900 Watts and having 19 speakers.
The Volvo XC90, will be available with various petrol and diesel engines, while there will also be a hybrid version, combining a two liter “Drive-E” engine with a supercharger and turbo, which drives the front wheels and an electric motor which drives the rear ones.
The Swedish company says that the XC90 will be “the most powerful and clean SUV in the world”, as it is equipped with the dual turbocharged T6 engine with 320 hp and 400 Nm of torque, the T5 with 254 horses and 350 Nm of torque. The D5 diesel engine combines a mechanical supercharger and an exhaust gas turbocharger (turbo) yielding 225 hp and 470 Nm of torque, with a consumption of about 6 l/100 km. Finally the D4 turbodiesel delivers 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque with a fuel consumption of about 5 l/100 km.
The hybrid version will be available with a T8 engine named ‘TwinEngine’, which will produce 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque, with emissions of CO2 at 60 g/km. The system combines the two-liter Drive-E, with a supercharger and a turbo that drives the front wheels and an electric motor of 80 hp (60 kW) that drives the rear wheels. The electric-only range will be about 40 km.
