A large crater of 20 to 25 meters in diameter and 3-4 meters depth was created by the controlled explosion of a WWII bomb weighing 500 kg on a part of the German Autobahn. The bomb was discovered by workers at the Frankfurt Airport on Highway 3 in Offenbach, with the police asking the people to travel by train.
The authorities decided to close an area with a radius of 1,000 meters, while 160 people were evacuated from their homes. The British World War II bomb, was found near the airport of Frankfurt, thus deemed necessary to close the southern runway, while several flights were delayed.
The deminers initially tried to defuse the bomb with chemicals. When that did not work, they had to do a controlled detonation. A similar incident had happened on the same highway in 2006.
