Subaru presented at the Geneva Motor Show the Subaru WRX STI. Compared with the simple but very capable WRX, the STI differs in many aspects.
Tthe chassis has been strengthened and the steering is more “short ” with 2.5 turns from stop to stop. As in the previous WRX STI, the front suspension consists of a McPherson strut with inverted aluminum lower arms while the car rests on 18 inch wheels with 245/40/18 tires. It is equipped with a full aerodynamic package that among other things includes the typical spoiler and at the rear a diffuser and LED lights.
The most significant difference compared with the simple WRX is the engine. The new WRX STI is driven by a turbocharged 2.5 liter boxer engine (EJ25) that produces 305 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 393 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm The engine comes exclusively with a special reinforced six speed manual gearbox and the standard (for the company and for the particular model) four-wheel drive.
The 2015 WRX STI is equipped with the Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential AWD that uses a planetary type center differential,a helical LSD for the front axle and Torsen differential at the rear. For the first time, the STI is equipped with the Active Torque Vectoring, a system that can brake a little, the inside front wheel to eliminate (or at least mitigate) the understeer. The top speed of the car is 264 km/h.
The changes are continued throughout the cabin where, according to Subaru, the car has significant improvements compared with the previous STI. The space available for passengers is bigger and the materials are of higher quality. For the first time, the STI is equipped with a flat-bottom steering wheel and two screens. A 3.5 inch in the front of the driver and a 4.3 inch in the center console. The standard equipment includes the dual-zone, automatic climate control and the All-Weather Package which among others includes heated seats.
