In 1967, when the Mustang was on the market for three years, Gene Bordinat, head of design of Ford, created the Mach 2 concept, a two-seater mid engine Mustang equipped with a 4.7 liter V8 engine. The car was described as the successor of the Shelby Cobra.

It was presented at the Chicago auto show and although everybody was impressed with the design, Ford did not give the car, the green light to pass in production.
