In the early 1980s, Volkswagen presented the Concept Car 2000. The car was equipped with a 1.2 liter three-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produced 53 hp and it could do the 0-100 km/h in 18.2 seconds, with a top speed of 161 km/hour, combined with a 5-speed manual transmission. The prototype never went in production.
