Toyota had built in 1986, the MR2 222D. The car was based on the first generation of the MR2 and it was constructed to participate in Group S and possibly in Group B. The regulations of the Group S restricted the racing cars to 300 hp, while each car had to be built 10 units to get the homologation.

However, a number of serious accidents in 1986, some of which were fatal, resulted in the end of Group B, and the Group S. This is how Toyota is left with a handful 222D prototypes and three MR2 Group S, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo producing over 600 hp. One of them was designed for asphalt racing, while the other two for gravel.
